Itasca Elementary Physical Education Program

Physical education is a vital part of a child’s educational endeavor. Itasca Elementary School physical education provides opportunities for all students. All students in grades K – 5 will receive a period of physical education instruction for a minimum of 50 minutes.

Our primary concern is the physical and social development of all students with an emphasis placed on lifetime activities. Students are to accomplish various skills within the realm of their individual abilities. Major content areas include motor and manipulative skills, rhythms, physical fitness, tumbling, cooperative activities, healthy living skills and lead-up games related to individual and team sports.

Because physical fitness and the reinforcement of positive healthy lifestyle practices are major goals, we solicit your cooperation by encouraging your child to participate in daily vigorous activities. A parent/guardian could make this a family event by walking, riding bicycles, playing catch or any other activity which movement is involved.

A student can be excused from physical education for a specified time due to illness. A parent/guardian may request their child be excused from participation through the elementary school office. The office may ask for verification or doctor’s release before returning a student to their physical education class.

Please have your children wear proper footwear (athletic or rubber soled shoes) for safe participation in physical education activities. If your child wants to wear sandals, please bring the athletic or rubber soled shoes to school so they may wear them during class.

Each student will receive a grade in physical education each six weeks. Their grade is based on cooperation, participation and performance activities required on the state FITNESSGRAM.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year in physical education. I sincerely appreciate your support and cooperation in assisting me with the provided opportunities for your child. My conference period is from 8:00-8:40 a.m. or feel free to send an e-mail to
